An old cog starts out to a big journey

This cog is waterproof due to a special wax treatment. You can really play with it on the water.

Materials:

  • 1 sheet of coloured construction paper DIN A3 (29.7 x 42 cm)
  • coloured craft sticks
  • 1 wooden pick
  • 2 tooth pick
  • yellow felt (a small piece is enough)
  • Pritt glue stick
  • Pritt Strong & Easy all-purpose glue

Tools:

  • scissors
  • thick needle

Instructions:

Step 1

Print out the template. Cut out the various parts of the cog and carefully glue them with Pritt glue stick on the construction paper.

Step 2

After the glue has dried, again cut out the parts along the outlines. Now you can start assembling the cog.

Step 3

To make the hull, you need the two side platings and the bottom plating. Bend the white glue flaps. Then fold the rear part of the bottom plating upwards. It forms the stern of the cog.

Step 4

Spread the triangular glue flaps with Pritt Strong & Easy all-purpose glue and stick them thoroughly to the bottom planting. When the glue has dried, paste the two big glue flaps to the stern of the cog.

Step 5

The hull is almost finished now. All you have to do is to stick together the bow of the cog. To do so, spread the margin of the two side platings carefully with Pritt Strong & Easy all-purpose glue and put a craft stick in between before putting them together. The craft stick is the jib boom of the cog. Press it firmly together until the glue has dried.

Step 6

The steerage will be plastered with craft sticks as planks. Before you stick on the craft sticks, pierce a hole with a needle at the marked spot. Through this the mast will be inserted later. Therefore, take care not to cover it. Now cut the craft sticks to the right length and stick them with Pritt Strong & Easy all-purpose glue side by side onto the steerage.

Step 7

Slide the wooden pick as mast into the hole on the steerage. Push on a cork from beneath. It's easier if you prick the cork with a needle before inserting the pick. Fixate the cork with Pritt Strong & Easy all-purpose glue. Glue a second cork to the bottom of the steerage. The the glue has dried, place the planked steerage in the boat hull. Beforehand spread the bottom of the two corks with glue to stably fixate the steerage within the hull.

Step 8

Now assemble the top deck. Fold the white glue flaps along the dashed line and glue them with Pritt glue stick to the side platings. The top deck will be planked as well. Cut the craft sticks to the right length and stick them with Pritt Strong & Easy all-purpose glue side by side onto the top deck. Finally, carefully glue the top deck onto the stern of the cog.

Step 9

Stick the cannon holes and the anchor onto the boat hull. Glue the steering wheel onto a craft stick and fixate it with Pritt Strong & Easy all-purpose glue on the steerage.

Step 10

Cut out a flag from felt and paste it with Pritt Strong & Easy all-purpose glue on a tooth pick.

Step 11

A halved cork forms the lookout. You can easily halve a cork with a knife. But be careful! Now glue the template onto the cork.

Step 12

Now you can set the sail. For the mast boom fixate a craft stick with Pritt Strong & Easy all -purpose glue on the top edge of the sail. Pierce the marked spots with a needle, pull the sail over the mast and put on the prepared lookout. Top the lookout with the flag and the cog is ready to launch. Cast off!

Hints:

The huge sheet of construction paper with the pasted template is hard to handle. It's easier to cut out the parts of the cog if you cut them rough first. After removing the unnecessary paper, simply cut along the outlines.

For parents / adults:

To half the corks you need a sharp knife.
Please supervise this step.
